Is CBD a Cure for Covid?

The simple answer is ‘no’, however, a recent study by Aging has found that cannabis may offer some help for patients with COVID-19. 

Covid-19 is a respiratory disease that has caused the whole world to grind to a halt, causing 128k deaths (as of May 2021) in the UK alone. Most of these deaths are caused by an immune response in the body called a “cytokine storm”, where the body starts to attack its own cells. This exaggerated immune response was also suspected to contribute to the lethality of the influenza pandemic in 1918–1919. 

The Aging research concluded that C.Sativa (a type of cannabis) shows an ability to block a cytokine storm in COVID-19 patients. The cytokine storm study showed that C.Sativa is able to reduce multiple cytokines and pathways which are related to inflammation and fibrosis. This could help Covid-19 patients to recover. According to OpenAccessGovernment.org, “Two of the cytokines that C.Sativa reduced were TNFa and IL-6, which are thought to be the main targets when trying to block a COVID-19 cytokine storm and acute respiratory distress syndrome”.

A study including the use of mice in 2020 showed that CBD (one of the active cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis), reduced proinflammatory cytokines and improved the clinical symptoms of mice with symptoms similar to COVID-19.
