Can CBD-Infused Cocktails (and Mocktails) Quench Your Thirst for Wellbeing?

CBD cocktails are flooding the wellness space at the moment, and for very good reason. Many of us enjoy a well-earned drink at the end of a busy day as it helps us to unwind, relax and enjoy some downtime. Relaxing in the company of friends can boost your sense of wellbeing and help spark those happy hormones (endorphins), making us feel more fulfilled and reconnected. CBD cocktails can enhance this feeling, leaving you feeling lighter and brighter than before. If you are looking for a delicious and fun way to get your wellness fix, CBD cocktails are where it is at.

Why Drink CBD?

CBD is an incredibly versatile and powerful botanical. Harnessing plant power, CBD is a health-boosting derivative from the hemp plant which is more effective than anything we’ve experienced in nature before. Cannabinoids (the compounds found in the hemp plant which are isolated to create CBD) are responsible for keeping the body in balance and achieve what is known as homeostasis. When we consume CBD, be that via a CBD cocktail or by using a CBD dropper, we can feel more connected and feel a greater sense of overall well being.  People who consume CBD cocktails (and other drinks such as CBD coffee and tea) love that it is an easily-accessible and delicious way to get their daily wellness fix – it’s so popular that according to reports, the CBD-infused drinks market is expected to reach £738.19 million by 2025!

Can CBD Oil and Hemp Oil be Used in the Same Way in Cocktails?

There are a total of 113 chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant which aren’t found anywhere else in nature. Scientists call these chemical compounds ‘cannabinoids’ and CBD is one of these cannabinoids. CBD is extracted using a meticulous process to ensure its purity and efficacy. Unlike THC (another of the compounds found in the cannabis plant), CBD does not cause psychoactive effects and is a safe, gentle, natural way to boost wellbeing.

Whilst CBD is extracted from the flowers, stalk and roots of the hemp plant, hemp seed oil is made using the hemp seeds alone – the seeds undergo a cold-pressing process which delivers the final product. Hemp oil can be a great addition to cocktails or as a food supplement because of its high levels of omegas (it has nearly 30 times more natural omegas than organic olive oil!) , gamma-linolenic acid, and nutritious antioxidant content. Whilst hemp seed oil is incredibly health-boosting itself, its relative absence of cannabinoids means it does not possess many of the benefits of its CBD counterpart, so hemp cocktails won’t give you the same remedial effect you’d hope to get from a CBD cocktail.

Is it Safe to Mix CBD and Alcohol?

CBD and alcohol are substances which are each so unique (and the relevant effects so dissimilar) that it is difficult to examine how CBD cocktails will make the person drinking the cocktail feel.

Reliable studies looking at the effects of mixing alcohol and CBD are limited, perhaps due to the wild variations in dosage, individual body weights and types of alcohol/CBD product used. There are so many variants to consider!

Whether your CBD cocktail is made using rum, gin, vodka (or a combination of each of your favourite spirits), the effects of each alcohol type can differ from person to person. Some users claim that drinking CBD cocktails can amplify the feelings associated with both alcohol and CBD, with relaxation and a good night’s sleep stated as the most common effects experienced and the reason why so many people drink CBD cocktails.

When infusing a cocktail with CBD, it’s prudent to take reliable advice about using CBD and alcohol together. For example, we advise that you observe the usual caution exercised when drinking alcohol, and always ensure that you know the amounts and ratios you are ingesting of both alcohol and CBD. If you are mindful of the dosage and you use CBD oil made by a company you trust, then it is completely safe to mix CBD and alcohol to create delicious CBD cocktails and mocktails.

Are CBD Cocktails Legal?

Mixologists all over the UK and beyond are discovering exciting new ways of incorporating CBD into cocktails and mocktails alike, but their legality is sometimes questioned because of CBD’s association with the cannabis plant. However, CBD is a natural, carefully-controlled plant extract which has more in common with nutritional supplements than those substances that are strictly regulated by law, so feel free to sup your favourite CBD cocktails happily, safe in the knowledge that you won’t be breaking any UK laws.

How to Add CBD Oil to Your Cocktail Recipes

One of the first (and arguably most ‘marmite’!) forms of CBD cocktails to emerge was the CBD float. A bit like the classic ‘Dirty Martini’, this is where the CBD oil is floated atop the cocktail, allowing you to experience the scent and taste of the CBD oil and its blend of terpenes. It is thought that terpenes can enhance your experience of CBD (and using raw CBD oil which hasn’t been processed or heated will ensure maximum flavour and effect), so a CBD float cocktail is a great way to experience all the beauty of CBD oil.

4 Delicious CBD Cocktail Recipes to Quench Your Thirst for Wellness

To be able to experiment with CBD in drinks safely, you first need to know exactly what is in your CBD oil. The most important thing when making a CBD cocktail or mocktail, is getting your CBD oil from a trustworthy, reputable supplier (like EthicaCBD). Here are some of our favourite CBD cocktail recipes, let us know your favourites over on Facebook and Instagram and let us know if you enjoy making CBD cocktails at home or prefer them made for you by a bartender. We can’t wait to hear your delicious recipes!

CBD Gin & Tonic

CBD is a botanical and so sits very comfortably alongside the botanical notes of gin and can really enhance this simple yet ever-popular two-ingredient cocktail. As with anything, the quality of the ingredients is of paramount importance to ensure the best end result. Use a carefully-made gin (we love Tarquins Cornish gin) as they share our ethos for quality, and meticulous attention to detail. It pairs perfectly with Fevertree tonic (a carbon neutral company which makes delicious tonics) and we find that our Night oil with its undernotes of lavender and chamomile works amazingly in a classic G&T.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Tarquins handcrafted dry gin
  • 6 drops of EthicaCBD Pure Night oil
  • Garnish: Slice of lime
  • Garnish: a sprig of rosemary
  • 200ml Tonic Water (We love Fevertree)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Fill a long glass with ice

  2. Add the gin followed by the CBD oil, and stir well

  3. Top up with tonic water

  4. Garnish with a slice of lime and rosemary sprig

CBD-Infused Pimms Cup

Whilst Pimms is a favourite summertime cocktail and renowned for being the ‘cocktail of choice’ at Wimbledon when muddled with strawberries and mint, when mixed with CBD and ginger it can take on a whole new level and becomes a popular CBD cocktail to be enjoyed at any time of the year. The refreshing combination of ginger and cucumber pairs perfectly with the notes of ginger in the CBD oil to create a refreshing drink to enhance your ‘chill’ factor.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Pimm’s Original No. 1
  • Splash of lemon juice
  • 3 cucumber slices
  • 25ml sugar syrup
  • 6 drops of Body oil
  • 100ml ginger beer
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Shake the cucumber in a cocktail shaker with the sugar syrup

  2. Add Pimm’s, ice, CBD oil and lemon juice and shake

  3. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice

  4. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a slice of cool cucumber

CBD Rum Mojito

This ever popular Cuban cocktail is a true classic for enjoying over crushed ice with friends. Mojitos are traditionally made with spiced rum but other spirits can be substituted depending on taste. We love supporting local businesses and are big fans of the Cornish rum ‘Dead Man’s Fingers’ (their lime rum works particularly well in a mojito!) You can also mix your CBD mojito up by using different fruits (such as sliced strawberries or crushed blueberries) for a unique taste sensation.

mojito

Ingredients

  • 50ml rum
  • 100ml soda water
  • 25ml sugar syrup
  • 2 wedges of lime (squeeze!)
  • 7 freshly picked mint leaves
  • 6 drops of Day oil
  • 1 sprig of fresh mint to garnish
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Use the end of a rolling pin to muddle the lime juice, sugar syrup, mint leaves, CBD oil and lime into a small jug

  2. Pour into a tall glass and add a handful of ice

  3. Pour over your choice of rum and stir

  4. Top up with soda water, garnish with mint and enjoy!

CBD-Infused “Mocktail” Fruit Punch

Using CBD instead of alcohol in your cocktails can create delicious drinks which not only taste amazing, but which can quench your thirst for wellness. Botanicals are a crucial component in many cocktails (think juniper in gin), so replacing that with a botanical like CBD can be a really great way to get your CBD fix without alcohol impeding on the pure CBD effect. Also a great option for dry January, we love this CBD mocktail recipe and drink it when we’re in need of a gentle warming glow…

Ingredients

  • 100ml freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 100ml sparkling water (sweetened or unsweetened)
  • 100ml cranberry juice
  • Ice cubes
  • 6 drops of Defence CBD oil
  • Orange slices to garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a glass a third of the way with orange juice

  2. Add a few drops of CBD oil and stir

  3. Pour your cranberry juice on top of the orange juice and let it filter through for a ‘sunset’ effect!

  4. Top off with sparkling water
  5. Garnish with orange slices and enjoy!
