Cooking with CBD Oil: 4 Rules You Need to Know!

CBD is fantastically versatile. All over the world, users are enjoying the many benefits of this natural extract. But did you know you can use CBD oil in cooking? As well as experiencing cannabidiol in the more traditional ways, you can add an extra dimension to your diet by infusing CBD as a food supplement.

Sound strange? It might not be quite as unusual as you first think. Our simple guide to cooking with CBD oil will give you all the information you need to make the most of this natural wonder plant.

Let’s remind ourselves of what CBD is…

CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is a natural extract derived from the hemp plant. CBD is becoming an increasingly popular supplement as those who use it share their health benefits and experiences.

As with all things hemp-based, CBD oil is the perfect enhancement to your regular routine. And by adding it to your food, there’s another opportunity for you to experience the benefits. Here are our 4 golden rules in making the most of hemp oil food recipes.

  1. Be careful with the heat!

There’s a reason EthicaCBD takes its time to carefully extract CBD oil from the hemp plant in small batches and at low heats. And that’s because excess heat can break down the goodness lurking within the plant structure. Don’t undo all of our good work by liberally splashing CBD oil into a searing hot pan. Experts recommend keeping the temperature below 160°C or 320°F when creating CBD culinary masterpieces. Any hotter and the potential benefits risk being destroyed by the heat.

But don’t worry if this isn’t possible. Consider ways that CBD can be added after the cooking process. For example, if baking a cake, add a few drops of oil to the icing. Or if frying a piece of food in a hot pan, why not add a dash of CBD into the accompanying salad dressing.

  1. Make the most of healthy fats

CBD is actually fat-soluble. This means that your body best absorbs the oil when it is combined with foods that contain fat. In order to ensure that this is a healthy process, think carefully about which fats you choose to combine the CBD oil with. Avocados, fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, sardines), nuts, eggs, and even chia seeds, are all high in healthy fats and make them the perfect partner to maximise the potential of CBD in your food. In fact, avocado on toast has become one of the most popular ways to introduce CBD to mealtimes.

  1. CBD in food is less potent, so think about this when preparing your recipes

When taking CBD in the traditional way, we recommend placing a few drops under your tongue. This is to ensure the oil is quickly ingested into the bloodstream. When adding CBD to food, it enters the body in an entirely different way, passing through your digestive system before eventually entering your blood. This means that the effects are not felt as quickly and may not be as potent as when using a dropper or spray. The technical name for this is the ‘first-pass effect’ which describes the reduced impact of a substance when taken orally. We’d never recommend exceeding the suggested daily dosage, but just be aware that a slightly higher measure might be required when adding CBD oil to recipes or food products.

  1. Check that you are using vegan CBD

If you are vegetarian or vegan, you need to be confident that any CBD supplements are suitable for your diet. EthicaCBD has worked hard to earn its vegan, vegetarian and organic credentials, so by savouring our extracts in your CBD recipes you know you are adding the very best.
