Meet Gail Muller – Chronic Pain Warrior, Educator and Adventurer

Gail Muller - Chronic Pain Warrior 3

At the tender age of 15, Gail Muller was told that she would be in a wheelchair by the age of 40. She had been suffering from muscular-skeletal issues which resulted in deep relentless pain, to which there was no remedy.

Years later a subluxation scan (a scan which shows any stress on your nervous system and how it is affecting your organs, muscles and energy levels and which should be completely clear and white), revealed huge black and red lines. The black lines show the maximum amount of pain a scan can show – and hers went right off the side of the monitor…

Finding Hope Through Adversity

Despite this, Gail spent the first few years following her diagnosis fit and well but, in her early twenties the debilitating pain truly began and chronic illness took the next 15 years of her life. The mental and physical struggle she faced as a result of her condition nearly destroyed her. However, this tenacious individual never gave up hope and Gail searched the world for different diagnoses and cures.

She was looking for something better than the pills and head shakes that doctors offered her at hospitals. One doctor even told her not to lean so heavily into hope as she would be disappointed and it would set her back further. He told her that she needed to work on acceptance. This lit a fire deep inside Gail; a fire which propelled her into proving that hope could actually be the thing which saved her. She realised that hope and acceptance could work hand in hand.

Eventually, Gail found a solution in Italy amid mountains, lakes and deep depression. After working with specialists there and rehabbing her body, Gail was able to regain control of her condition. The turning point came when she decided to treat her pain as a part of her, and throw love and understanding and compassion at it. Once she realised that the pain was chronic and fighting it hadn’t helped, she decided to “not fight it, but make friends with it”. This was monumental in helping her to deal with her condition and live with the pain so she could achieve what she wanted to achieve.

Gail hiked for 6 months on one of the longest continuous trails in the world

Hiking the Appalachian Trail

And achieve she did! At the age of 41, Gail hiked for 6 months along one of the world’s toughest treks, The Appalachian Trail – a 2,200-mile journey through the wilds of America that helped her to heal her mind and body.

The Appalachian Trail runs through fourteen states down the East Coast of the USA, and most people attempt it by starting from Georgia in the south and heading northbound. The reason they hike in this direction is because the terrain in Maine and New Hampshire is extremely tough on both body and mind, and people prefer to let their bodies get ready over the 1800 mile hike up. Gail chose to go the other way…

Many choosing to tackle this enormously challenging trail Southbound often quit after the first 100 miles of wilderness. It’s tough, it lacks natural provisions of food and water, and can be a real shock to the system. Gail however gritted her teeth and battled on, completing 2000+ miles in just over 6 months.

Speaking about her experience, Gail says, “Walking for over 6 months along the Appalachian Trail meant that I went days barely seeing folks aside from the little gang I might put up my tent with, and that amount of silence and forest bathing will truly ask you to look at yourself and understand who you really are. The outdoors is as humbling as it is healing. You can see the seasons pass, observe how nature mends and accommodates injury, how flexible the flora and fauna are in order to survive, and then you can take those lessons back with you into your daily life. “

And all whilst living with chronic pain. Gail really is an incredible advocate for finding your own wellness and looking at the body holistically in order to regain some control. We are so humbled to have her as an ambassador for EthicaCBD and proud to share her story. A story which she recently wrote all about in her best-selling book Unlost.

As Gail took her first steps through the wilderness of the USA, she had no idea what lay ahead of her, but she knew she felt burnout from city life, lost and broken – ready to heal a mind and body that she had battled with for so long.

Gail’s debut novel, Unlost, is a love letter to the healing power of the wild outdoors and an incredible testament to the strength of the human spirit. Gail’s story is for anyone who has ever felt stuck in a rut, lost or scared. She shows us that even in our darkest times, it’s possible to find our inner grit, face our fears and feel hopeful.

What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is something which keeps hurting despite treatment. We all experience pain when we hurt ourselves, but once the injury has healed, the nerve receptors switch off, telling our brains that the injury site doesn’t hurt any more. With chronic pain, the pain receptors keep on firing even after the injury has healed. Long-term sufferer Gail describes her condition as, “…the realisation that the pain you’re experiencing won’t get better. Nothing that you do can achieve a resolution of the pain”.

Chronic pain can range in severity from person to person and can be caused by a plethora of conditions from arthritis to back problems, fibromyalgia and migraines. Sometimes chronic pain is accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, depression, lack of energy and appetite loss. Crucially, chronic pain can have a really negative effect on the mind. Because there is seemingly no end to their suffering, people experiencing chronic pain can spiral into a helpless, depressed state and their mental health suffers as a result. When pain is all-encompassing, it is easy to see how mental health can deteriorate.

Gail Muller and CBD

Gail has found that using CBD oil has helped her to manage her pain symptoms and ease her mind. She says “In the last year I’ve found CBD oils which have had profoundly positive effects on my body and mind. They help me sleep, calm my anxiety and absolutely help to ease the pain sensations I feel when my body is flaring up or inflammation is limiting my movements. EthicaCBD really researches their products and are passionate about making a difference in the world”.

Gail uses a variety of different EthicaCBD drops and says that her most commonly used combination is the Night and the Calm tinctures. She says that the Calm oil really helps calm her racing heart before she has to step on a stage and give a talk, and the Night formula helps to soothe her busy brain.

She explains, “This is especially interesting now that I’ve just had a ‘late’ ADHD diagnosis, so it’s clear both those formulas have really assisted me in keeping my thoughts calmer and more ordered, meaning a better night’s sleep and a much better day the next day! All the tinctures also help my chronic pain, and they all taste great!”

What is Next for Gail?

From new hiking challenges to TV documentaries and a second book, Gail is never one to rest on her laurels and we are delighted that we can support her in her adventures.

Gail says, “Some of the best trail advice I ever received was ‘Never quit on a bad day’. Sometimes it rains for weeks and all your kit is wet. You might miss home, fall out with trail friends or run out of food miles from town and be hangry. You could just feel miserable or have injuries and be exhausted. It all builds up and you want to throw your hands in the air and quit, but the sage wisdom is never to quit on that day. You can tell yourself you’ll quit (which helps!) but you have to wait until the next good day before you quit. Then of course, when the next good day arrives, you don’t want to quit anymore”.

Words we’ll definitely live by in the future…
