At EthicaCBD we have taken the decision to collect our whole plant CBD using a technique called supercritical CO2 extraction. This highly complex process allows us to not only control the entire extraction, but removes the need for any additional additives or contaminants. Supercritical CO2 extraction is highly efficient and makes the most of the entire hemp plant. It is a completely sustainable process and each step is eco-sensitive and environmentally friendly.
The extraction begins with a liquid form of carbon dioxide (CO2). This CO2 is slowly heated and the pressure is increased until it is classified as ‘supercritical’. This simply means the carbon dioxide displays the properties of both a gas and a liquid. In this state, it can fill a container like a gas would, but also behaves as a liquid in terms of density and properties.
This supercritical CO2 is then passed through the raw material under very strict conditions allowing the cannabinoids to be separated from the hemp plant itself. Crucially this process does no damage to terpenes or other extracts, creating the purest possible CBD extracts. Carefully balancing the pressure and temperature is a highly skilled process, and a tricky one to perfect, but EthicaCBD has worked tirelessly to hone its methods of extraction in order to deliver the highest quality CBD extracts.
By carefully controlling the CBD extraction process, we are able to decide what stays and what goes, retaining the all-important phytocannabinoids and terpenes that are often discarded by other extraction processes.
